Cherry Rats formed in 2018 either by destiny or accident, depending on your perspective, in the fertile yet secluded musical community of Nevada City, California. The quartet of bassist Art Echternacht, guitarist/vocalist Chris Streng, guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Hansard, and drummer Ryan Everson were all in musical orbits of sorts in past bands before the stars aligned to bring these four fated rockers together to create the heaviest grooves in their corner of the state. The original trio of Chris, Ryan, and Art fell upon the name Cherry Rats as a slight variation on an anagram of their names, but it’s more than just random luck: the mingling of sweet and sinister are apparent in every raucous, playful tune on their new album, Electric Executioner.
Before the Rats played their first gig, they consecrated their bonds as a band by bearing witness to rock legends KISS in concert, and the theatricality and showmanship of many rock and metal greats has made its way into the DNA of the band just as much as the hard and heavy sound has. At the first Cherry Rats gig of 2021, the band’s catchy and heady sound would’ve been enough to win over the crowd on its own, but the shock-rock-esque mock electrocution onstage ensured nobody would forget their triumphant return to the live arena. With all the bravado of rock’n’roll and the band’s full stack stage shows, it’d be easy for them to churn out one-dimensional rockers, but with lyrics inspired by William Blake and Robert E Howard’s Conan sitting alongside party-ready anthems, Cherry Rats keep fans on their toes.
With their recent signing to Dowd Records, the Rats have released their own limited edition fuzz pedal for those who want to bring the sound and soul into their own creative works.
Electric Executioner was recorded in 2022 with Tim Green at Louder Studio and will be out October 28th on limited edition oil slick purple vinyl and on all streaming services to satiate the needs of the riff-worshiping masses.
