Bonus Episode: Dowd Records and the making of The Nevada City Album Vol.1 Jason Clark of the very rad collective Dowd Records talks about getting twelve local bands and artists to deliver an original, unreleased song in a mere seven days.

Listen to The Nevada City Album, Vol. 1 on Spotify. Various Artists · Compilation · 2020 · 13 songs.

Aaron Ross

Aaron Ross’ music is more than a listening experience but a poetic endeavor that explores the scope of life. Each song tells a magnificently dynamic tale, complete with a lyrical imagery reminiscent of greats like Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, and Patti Smith, and sung with the heartfelt resolve that makes Ross’ voice one-of-a-kind. One of the most prolific songwriters of his generation, Ross has written and recorded hundreds of songs that have spanned his eleven solo albums, a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration with Sacramento experimental rock group Hella for their 2007 album There’s No 666 in Outer Space (Ipecac), and later the power psych project Solos with Spencer Seim of Hella, which produced Beast of Both Worlds (recorded and produced by the legendary Guy Massey). Equally at home with solo folk romps, melodic pop grooves, soft guitar lullaby summons featuring piano and strings, and heavy rock ballads backed by a full band and a wall of amplifiers, Ross’ remarkable vocal agility always leaves the listener with a resounding message on humanity.

Brett Shady

Brett Shady’s songs blend waltzing country, folk strumming, pop melodies, 50s balladry & indie-pop and has led to his sharing the stage with the likes of Chris Isaak and Jeff Bridges while playing and contributing with notable independent artists including Little Wings & Golden Shoulders.

Beautiful Dudes

Beautiful Dudes continue their summer of collaborations and new music with the release of Beverly Hills, the first single from their upcoming EP Nite Songs
Nite Songs sees the Dudes embracing rocking riffs and dark melancholy with an uplifting optimism that is the perfect soundtrack for our current times. Revolution, isolation, unity and triumph resound in what is one hell of a collection of songs.

The songs, in true Dudes style, are beautiful, timeless and catchy with Tom Bevitori’s vocals finding new and moving ground while the band - with Art Echternacht on bass, Robbie Landsburg on guitar and Zach Peach on drums, take us from epic minimalism to dreamy psychedelic heights full of feedback and swagger.

As part of the Beautiful Dudes summer madness, they just released a limited edition skateboard deck and exclusive single with Lurkville Skateboards, they have an EP of all new material and also a live EP coming out in September.

TLA

Five high school students from different walks of life endure a Saturday detention under power-hungry principal Migs. The disparate group includes rebel Sorty, outcast Tahiti, brainy J.R., and Jay, the jock. Each has a chance to tell their story, making the others see them a little differently — and when the day ends, they question whether school will ever be the same.

Casual Fog

The Fog is back. 400 Degrees is our first glimpse at the upcoming new Casual Fog releases and is simply stunning. Ryan Donnelly’s signature lulling tenor is haunting and touching in this cinematic and stripped down new song. As always, Ryan has enlisted an impressive group of talent to collaborate with and 400 Degrees has John Simpson on bass, Ryan Sheridan on drums and Justin Hunt on synthesizer and orchestration.

Casual Fog has released nine albums and EPs over the last 15 years and is a cornerstone in Nevada City music creative circles. Ryan has been in the studio for the last year writing and recording the upcoming Casual Fog album In Still Delight out in September.

Shapes Freely

Shapes freely is the moniker for multi-instrumentalist Brook Caballero’s on going collaborative music project. In Gratitude is the first single of the upcoming (yet to be titled) second album. The second release from Brook promises to be baroque pop gem. “It’s even weirder than the first record” says collaborator Ben Milner.

Look for it soon

Tiera May

Dowd Records is proud to officially release the first song from the incredibly talented Tiera May. Tiera’s moody psych rock sets the scene for her sultry vocals and vivid lyrics that conjure a sense of longing and evoke visions of running through Nevada City in the dead of night. Her seductive vocal delivery is accentuated by moments of biting catharsis. Mercurial and haunting, Tiera’s songwriting shifts between dreams and harsh realities.

Are these love songs or incantations? You decide.

Prepare to be swept away.

Jessica Lynn and Broken Spoke

Jessica Lynn is a singer/songwriter from Nevada City California settled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas. A warm and strong voice expresses the love of the land, heartbreak, and love . Now joined up with Blake Severn, Barry Anderson, and Neil Layton of Broken Spoke, the songs have new life and some rockin attitude. Their music combines country rock, folk, and that good ol' small town feel to fill your hearts and ears.

Cherry Rats

Many bands are formed from the ashes of other fallen bands. The story of Cherry rats smoldered for a long time.

Art had played with Chris and Ryan in many previous bands, but due to other projects and life in general they had kept seldom contact over the last decade. However, due to their life long dedication and patience, the rock gods had something important in store for them. With a few out of the blue text messages of “hey, you good for band practice on Friday?” Cherry Rats was born. They got in the garage and resumed as if no time had passed. However after a few weeks of realizing their party anthems were taking a metal turn, Jonathan was called in for reinforcements. With the rat as their mascot their pentagram of rock was compete.

Cherry rats were and will always remain, hungry for distortion.

Mount Whateverest

With a peak at 29,000 feet above sea level, Mount Everest in Nepal is one of the world’s tallest mountains. The musicians who comprise the Nevada City rock band Mount Whateverest have been to similar heights. Singer and guitarist Chris Streng (ex-Stratford 4) plays the role of Edmund Hilary, the first Westerner to scale such heights while the rhythm section of bassist Steve Melendez and drummer Jonah Wells (ex-Jeepster) combine to embody Tenzing Norgay, the patient Sherpa who led the way while Hilary reaped the glory.

Aided by Cynthia Harrell and Sasha Soukup (ex- Sasha and the Shamrocks) on vocals and keetar, they form a musical unit capable of reaching staggering heights. Their music is a noisy collision of sugar-coated pop, space-jazz interludes and giant, classic rock riffs. Chanted school yard choruses combine with thumping glam rhythms to create the kind of day-glow rock and roll not heard since T. Rex roamed the Earth. Armed with distortion boxes, lasers and lots of extra oxygen, Mount Whateverest are so high, they’re breaking through into the bottom of something else entirely.

Farrow and the Peach Leaves

Farrow and the Peach Leaves are a 5 piece americana country rock band based out of the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Nevada City, Ca. Graham Knibb (vocals, guitar) Zach Peach (vocals, drums) Leif Bo Bonfils (vocals, bass) and Hunter Jones (keyboards, lap steel) all grew up together in the backwoods region of Nevada county, an upbringing that comes through in their music. Keith Knibb (guitar) rounds out the lineup and brings some much-needed wisdom to the table.

The Fit

The Fit is a post-pop electronic band that uniquely applies a hybrid approach to writing, producing and performing live music that includes both electronic and traditional instruments incorporated into a single medium.

Starting in 2015, Jeffrey Thorsby and Jonah Wells formed the The Fit to develop music free of traditional song structure but that included catchy hooks with experimental noise pop riffs. As no strangers to one another, Jonah and Jeff partnered after years of separation from their first project Pisces Knife that included Beautiful Dudes’ bassist Art Echternaught and Cherry Rats’ drummer Ryan Everson. During that time, Jonah’s other projects included Jeepster, Little California, Fresh Young Blood and Mount Whateverest, while Jeff worked on performing solo music and playing guitar for Physical Education. The Fit’s influences vary wildly but have included Blonde Redhead, Sparklehorse, David Bowie, The Zombies,  Hella, T. Rex, Sonic Youth, Olivia Tremor Control, Pulp, Tears for Fears, and LCD Soundsystem. The Fit’s dynamic setup includes drums, guitar, samplers, electronic drums, plenty of synthesizers and vocal processing.  The Fit self-released their self-titled EP in 2018 that is available online everywhere.

The Moore Brothers

Unlike many bands claiming to be brothers, Greg and Thom Moore actually are siblings, growing up together in Altadena, CA. And although they had both been playing in various projects for years, it wasn’t until 2001 that the two finally established the Moore Brothers. Beginning in the late ’80s, Thom Moore formed several bands, including Colorful Calliope with R&B singer Jon B. Greg released a solo record before joining Thom for the folk-punk band Thumb of the Maid. After its other members departed, Thom and Greg formed Moore Brothers and released their debut, Colossal Small, on Amazing Grease (founded by Pavement’s Scott Kannberg).

Park Street Riot

Formed in the quiet northern California foothills in 2016, Nevada City’s, Park Street Riot, has continually pushed their own sonic edge, establishing themselves as one of the most dynamic, powerful, and energetic new bands to emerge from the greater-Sacramento area.
Their debut self-titled record released in March 2019 and recorded by Tim Green at Louder Studios (Bikini Kill, Melvins, Joanna Newson), is a testament to the songwriting prowess of frontwoman Marielle Walker, as well as the groups varied individual influences and musicianship.
With a cohesive and catchy blend of garage rock, psychedelia, and early 2000’s alternative, Park Street Riot’s live show is incomparably heavy and compelling, laced through with the melancholic and emotional raw power of Walker’s natural rock tenor, as well as the melodic and thunderous rhythmic foundations of Ryan Donnelly, Alex Scribner, and Ryan Sheridan.
Lyrically, Walker confronts themes of loss, existential dread, and small town hedonism with an emotional rawness and wry wit that naturally expresses the many dualities present in our misunderstood human nature. In the current sea of cheap rock monotony, Park Street Riot’s music shines as a strange and exceptional jewel, bringing forth a realness and honesty representative of their own personal friendship and backwoods home.
